Slim might be in elsewhere but for Ethiopia’s Bodi or Me’en people, bigger is always better. The tribe, which lives in a remote corner of Ethiopia’s Omo Valley, is home to an unusual ritual which sees young men gorge on cow’s blood and milk in a bid to be crowned the fattest man.

Six months after starting the regime, the men emerge to show off their newly engorged physiques and for a winner to be chosen. The champion fat man is then feted as a hero for the rest of his life.

Now the little known rite is the subject of incredible photos taken by French shutterbug Eric Lafforgue – who spent time with the Bodi while travelling through south-western Ethiopia during the run up to the Bodi New Year or Ka’el ceremony.

Life has never been easy in the Balkans, Endemic sectarian violence and blood feuds mean a prudent man never goes unarmed. Going armed in the years before World War I often meant shoving a big 11mm Gasser revolver in your sash. If it was intricately engraved, so much the better. Watch for Paul Scarlata’s study of the Gasser in an upcoming issue.

Keep your Kate Middleton look. The well-dressed Albanian bride sports a Gasser revolver at her waist and a Mauser carbine, while her groom backs up his rifle with a dagger and ornate Broomhandle Mauser. Celebratory gunfire, anyone?

As a photographer, peregrinator and naturalist, I have been searching for the ultimate unworldly world. I’ve always been drawn to unusual travel destinations. For me, to lose myself in a different culture is a great way to find balance in my life.

“Through The Unknown Tashkurgan” unveils an unworldly world I discovered on the Pamir Plateau. At China’s western frontier, in the eastern part of the Pamirs and on the “roof of the world” is the Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County in Xinjiang Province. Tashkurgan has a long history as a stop on the Silk Road. Tajiks reside in relative isolation in the snow capped Pamir mountain range of western China near the borders of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan. There are about 41,000 Tajiks living in Tashkurgan. They live in harmony and intimacy born out of mutual trust and love.

Ташкурган — высокогорный изолированный район на западе Китая. Он расположен в Памире на высоте 3600 метров в месте, где сходятся границы Афганистана, Таджикистана, Киргизии и Пакистана. Большую часть жителей составляют памирские народы: сарыкольцы и ваханцы. Там очень холодно, почти нет электричества и телефонной связи. Нет там и доступа в больницы, а местные жители страдают от голода. Однако Ташкурган все равно является особенным местом, которое красит не природа, а люди. Фотограф Синь Чжао признается, что ему никогда не доводилось видеть такие лица. В их глазах большой житейский опыт и умение радоваться жизни.

Американский фотограф Фил Борджес рассказал историю жизни коренных народов Тибета.

Фил Борджес фотографирует только людей. Но не просто людей, а только тех, кого мы, жители городов, не видим. Тех, что живут своей собственной, какой-то очень непонятной жизнью далеко от нашей европоцентристской цивилизации. В течение уже почти двадцати пяти лет Фил Борджес путешествует по миру и изучает культуру народностей, находящихся на грани исчезновения. На его фотографиях мы видим обитателей того мира, по отношению к которому по традиции используем клише «страны третьего мира», «малые народы», «неблагополучные — или просто развивающиеся — государства».

Почти все снимки Борджес делает с близкого расстояния, что позволяет добиться резкости всех деталей портрета. При этом задний план сохраняется размытым, поскольку, как правило, существенно удален от места съемки; это позволяет сконцентрировать взгляд на человеческой фигуре, которая буквально заслоняет от нас всю окружающую реальность.

«Я хочу, чтобы зритель видел в этих людях индивидуальность, знал их имена, что-то из их истории, а не просто смотрел на фотографии и видел на них члена какой-то маленькой этнической группы или племени», — говорит Фил. Именно поэтому каждая фотография мастера снабжена четким комментарием, рассказывающим историю жизни запечатленного камерой человека.

Thick scars coloured dull red and black cover the backs of women belonging to Ethiopia’s Hamar tribe, the legacy of an initiation rite that sees them beaten bloody.

No screaming is permitted by the men wielding the canes but the women don’t care. Instead of fleeing, they beg the men to do it again and again until blood flows, dripping into the gritty red dust of the Omo River Valley.

Now the Hamar and their unique culture that merges the beautiful and the brutal in equal measure are the subject of a series of incredible photographs created by French lensman, Eric Lafforgue.
